”Kanazawa 21st Century Museum”

Museum located in the center of Kanazawa

A circular modern structure on the lawn right next to the scenic ”Kenrokuen” and ”Kanazawa Castle Park”, is the ”Kanazawa 21st Century Museum” opened in 2004. The museum exhibits world known modern art, and is a new artistic spot in the town of Kanazawa, famous for its traditional ”kogei” culture.
The facility was designed by SANAA: Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates. The circular building has an outer wall made of glass, and does not have the concept ”front entrance” or ”back door”. The facility was made upon the theme, ”a park-like museum, open to the city”.
In the exhibit areas, are independent cubes (display spaces) which can be observed in any order. There is also space available for rent to be used for citizens’ art displays, and a theater to promote artistic activities in the communication zone.

A Relaxing spot to be in touch with art

The works owned are mostly installation-works, that has great affinity with the architecture and the space of the facility. The 2 most talked about works that had attracted attention even before its opening are Leandro Erlich’s ”Pool” and James Turrell’s ”Blue Planet Sky”. In fact there is art displayed even in the restrooOne of the features of this museum is that the visitors can see the works up close. They plan special displays for the long term, sometimes as long as 3 months, making it possible for visitors from afar to stop by.
There are also events such as performances of up-and-coming artists and entertainment, valuable film screenings, and talk events.
Kanazawa 21st Century Museum aims to ”Create New Culture” and ”Create a New Spot in Town”. This museum is much like a park where people can visit and enjoy a stroll inside. They have created an environment where the visitors, artists, and the museum can share and discuss the culture which we reside in. Please drop by on your next trip to Kanazawa.
