Located in the northern part of Kyushu, the western portion facing the Sea of Japan is called Genkai Sea while the eastern portion is called Hibikinada. The northeast portion faces Suo-nada Sea, the northwest portion faces the Ariake Sea, and the Tsukushi mountain range crosses the center of the prefecture. The traditional festival is derived from ”Matsu Bayashi” which is listed in a historical document dated back to the period of the Chikuzen-no-kuni (Chikuzen Province), and is held every year on May 3 and 4. Approximately 30,000 people march through the streets while slapping ”shamoji” (rice scoops). The festival draws crowds of more than 2,000,000 onlookers.
