The northern part of Gifu, the Hida district region, is a mountainous area with many mountains as high as 3000 m. The average temperature is low with heavy snowfall. Mino region in the south is known as the riverside region where the three Kiso rivers run through Nobi Plain. Temperature is high during summer in Tajimi City area due to westerly winds.

Gifu Prefecture - Known for ceramic art and ceramic industry
”Mino-yaki” is a style of earthenware pottery which developed under the protection of feudal lords and masters of tea ceremony. There are many kilns in the Toki and Tajimi areas where various ceramic products, such as tableware and tiles are produced. The area is also very active in nurturing new talent.
World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go’s ”Gassho-zukuri”

In 1995, the majestic village of ”gassho-zukuri” houses was designated as World Heritage ”Village of Gassho-zukuri Houses of Shirakawago and Gokayama” by UNESCO. The pride of Japan, the collection of buildings is an example of everyday life and nature blending perfectly with each other.
”Gifu Great Buddha (Daibutsu) at Shohoji” - The largest ”basket buddha” in Japan.
Largest dry lacquered buddha in Japan, known also as ”basket buddha.” The framework was made from wood, then shaped using bamboo and clay. Buddhist sutras written on ”Mino washi paper” was applied all over the statue, and the surface finished with layers of lacquer.

Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu
The museum houses numerous ceramic art and practical ceramic tableware, with emphasis on modern age pieces from 19th century onwards.
