Pineapple farming popular in Okinawa

We were introduced to a farm of pineapples, one of the famous products of Okinawa, by Kenji Kunii of Iriomotejima.

It was the farm of Hidekatsu Ikemura, who grows special ”peach pineapples” which is harvested around April to June. He has been struggling to continue growing good fruit for many years, fighting against the Iriomote climate which brings numerous typhoons to the area.

The official name for the so-called ”peach pineapple” is ”Soft Touch”. Compared with the typical pineapple, it is a bit red in color and slightly smaller. The inside of it is milky white, and has a sweet fragrance like a peach.
