Spreading learning in the community

Shizutani School is the largest school in the world. It was founded in the 17th century by Mitsumasa Ikeda, the 3rd lord of Okayama clan. Not only children from samurai families but common people of the domain could learn at the school, and it was also open to people from other domains as well.
Mitsumasa had great passion for education. He took measures for the school to be self managing, so that it could continue even if he were to relocated to a different domain. His spirit was passed down for ages, making Shizutani School an important based for education in Okayama. It was visited by important figures in education and arts, such as Rai Sanyo in the 17th century.

Beauty in architecture and landscape

Architectural design is also a highlight of Shizutani School. The elaborately designed auditorium using the finest materials such as Japanese zelkova and Japanese cypress is a designated National Treasure. Most other buildings and structures such as the mausoleum with hexagonal Bizen ware tiles, small study resembling a tea room, dining area, library, and stone wall are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
The area around Shizutani School is designated as a National Special Historical Site, and the scenery is magnificent. The road that leads in to Yoshinaga town from the school is considered one of “500 Beautiful Walking Roads of Japan”. It is known for beautiful autumn foliage.
It is a great place to walk and enjoy the scenery.
