Craftsmanship used in the treasures kept at Shosoin

The traditional craftwork ”Tomioka Kiryu Zaiku” has been handed down for generations in Hyogo Prefecture, mainly in Tomioka. Generally, ”Tomioka Kiryu Zaiku” means wicker trunk. Japanese people have used the light, durable, and breathable tool for storing and carrying clothes for a long time. Today, craftsmen make baskets and bags in addition to wicker trunks. There are many fans of Tomioka Kiryu Zaiku.
Tomioka Kiryu Zaiku has a long history. Some say that Prince Amenohiboko from Silla conveyed the production techniques in the first century. Shosoin at Todaiji stores ”Tajimanokuni-san Yanagibako” that was made in the Nara Period. Therefore, certainly. the craftwork has been produced for over 1200 years.
Tomioka Kiryu Zaiku became well known in Edo Period. The ”koriyanagi” willow used for making wicker trunk grows naturally in Tomioka. The production of Kiryu Zaiku became popular among the farmers as a side business during winter when snow prevented them from farming. The feudal domain government of the area promoted the craftwork, and the monopoly system was established in 1763. It triggered the nationwide dissemination of wicker trunks made in Tomioka around Japan as well as Edo.

Recently, the basket became famous as ”Naru-chan bag”, nicknamed after Prince Naruhito who carried it with him when going to Gakushuin Kindergarten around 1965. The bag became extremely popular. Today, Princess Masako uses the Kiryu Zaiku bag frequently.
Takumikougei is one of the workshops that preserves the tradition of Kiryu Zaiku. Takumi Terauchi, the artisan certified as a traditional craftsman, produces wicker trunks and other products by hand.
You may find the price rather high. However, the delicateness, functionality, and artistic quality is well worth it.
