It is not possible to establish an understanding of "monozukuri" or Japanese style of manufacturing through observation alone. Whether it be turning the potter's wheel, scraping wood, or using a "fude" (Japanese brush), actually participating in the activity first hand allows one to fully experience the depth and level of the skills that are involved. That is why Nakata makes it a point to experience as many activities as possible for himself.
Performance art is the same. The graceful moves that are typical of Japanese performance art are a testament to the years of training and diligence.
The individuals involved in protecting and passing on these traditions and culture are committed to their work, and deserving of our respect.
