”Dejima”

Signs of its past in foreign diplomacy

During the Edo period, a Dutch trading post was set up on Dejima. It was the only place where trade with the West was permitted, leading to tremendous achievements in modernizing Japan. Ten buildings from the early 19th century have now been reconstructed on this island. In addition, the former Dejima Theological Seminary and the former Nagasaki International Club, built in the Meiji period still remain. The history and life on Dejima is featured with focus on trade and culture – the history of Dejima’s birth, the goods that were traded on Dejima, and the life of Dutch commercial staff are shown with items and models. In addition, academic studies, animals and plants that entered Japan through Dejima, and Japan studied by Dutch commercial staff are also displayed.
You can see that Dejima was a leader, during Japan’s period of national isolation.
